Project Status: 6 Project underway
Commencement Date: 01.01.2020
Duration in months: 36 months
Objective
In the framework of the project it is planned to Develop the legal acts directed for carrying out supervision over remediation activities of territories contaminated by uranium industry‘s radioactive waste in Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.Currently, passports of uranium production tailings of northern Tajikistan, tailing sites of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have been identified. Within the framework of the projects of the European Commission and the EurAsEC Interstate Targeted Program, a feasibility study and environmental impact assessment of the process of remediation of uranium tailings in Tajikistan (Degmai and Taboshar sites), in Kyrgyzstan (Mailuu Suu, Min-Kush and Shekaftar fields) and in Uzbekistan were conducted and monitored. It is planned to carry out physical remediation of these sites in 2019. Unfortunately, at the moment in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan there is only a general legislative framework in this area and no detailed regulatory legal acts regulating all the activities of the remediation of Uranium Legacy sites. Therefore, for both operator and regulatory body it is difficult to ensuring radiation safety, monitoring exposure of workers and the public and monitoring the environmental pollution during remediation activities.
