Development and implementation of an automated information system of the Republican Collection of Industrial Microorganisms

Project Status: 3 Approved without Funding
Duration in months: 18 months

Objective

The purpose: Development and implementation of an automated information system of the Republican Collection of Industrial Microorganisms for the development of bioeconomy of country and for its international integration.

The state of affairs in the field of research: Currently, the amount and quality of repositories of microbial cultures maintained in the collections of the world, constitute the most important resource, providing development of science, education and the bioeconomy. The increase in the pace of the study of microorganisms and their properties, including looking to theirs practical use, accompanied by a growing need of researchers in the receipt of the required samples from a particular collection, as well as fast access to information about storable bacterial cultures. Therefore, almost all national and international collections of microorganisms already converted into electronic format.

There are various electronic versions of catalogs of collections of microorganisms located on the Web-site of the American Collection of Microorganisms (ATCC) at http://www.lgcstandards-atcc.org, European Collection of Cell Cultures (ECACC) at http: //www.hpacultures .org.uk, German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures at http://www.dsmz.de, Japan collection of microorganisms at http://www.jcm.riken.jp, the Russian National Collection of Industrial Microorganisms on address http://www.genetika.ru, the All-Russian collection of Microorganisms (VKM) at http://www.vkm.ru, Belarus National Academy of Sciences Institute of Microbiology at http://mbio.bas-net.by.

RSE "Republican Collection of Microorganisms" (hereinafter - RCM), established by Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated December 10, 2003 № 1257 "On some issues of the Republican Collection of Microorganisms", as the National Depository of industrial microorganisms. RCM in 2006 became a member of the World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC) with acronym RCM, at number 907. At present in the RCM 565 strains of industrial microorganisms are stored. Passports of strains, information of the morphological features, biochemical, genetic, and others properties are stored in paper form, which greatly restricted access to information for stakeholders.

The impact of the proposed project on the progress in this field. An effective way of providing information for modern researcher about industrial strains of microorganisms with extremely high biotechnology potential is to provide direct access to specialized electronic databases. Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated March 17, 2015 № 1025, Kazakhstan ratified the Nagoya Protocol on access to genetic resources to the Convention on Biological Diversity. However, to date, in Kazakhstan there is no electronic catalog of microorganisms, providing access to real time information. In this regard, the development of an automated information system of the Republican Collection of Industrial Microorganisms of Kazakhstan, analysis and structuring of the data and other available information, the organization of communication in the on-line with relevant information resources of the world is one of the important directions of the development of collections of microorganisms that contribute to the development of whole bioeconomy of the country and integration of the collection into the global community. The planned development and implementation of an automated information system of the Republican Collection of Industrial Microorganisms, will be the first in Kazakhstan.

The competence of the participants of the project in this area. Employees of the RCM participating in the project have extensive experience in the collection business to maintain, deposition and certification of industrial microorganisms, which is confirmed by the available publications and presentations at international conferences, and their data is available on the Internet website of the "http: // www. rcm.kz.

Expected results and their use. As a result of the project will be developed the first modern automated information system in the country, that will provide the open on-line access to information about specific strains of Industrial Microorganisms. The automated information system will provide convenience and efficiency of the search of available information about strains which can be needed in time of planning and carrying out different fundamental, applied and analytical studies. Information about the Republican Collection of Industrial Microorganisms can be in demand in various fields of science and practice relating to the issues of patenting of the strains and scientific-organizational preventive measures for the conservation of biological diversity. It is envisaged that the automated system will enable the RCM to generate self-sustaining income streams and services to national and global customers.
