Peaceful uses of nuclear energy and nuclear applications and the role of nuclear security

Objective

Four lunchtime panel discussions covering key aspects of nuclear security as part of the sustainable use of nuclear and other radioactive materials will be organised along the following themes:

· The sustainable use of nuclear power to provide reliable, affordable and sustainable energy for all (tentative date 20 February 2019)

· End of life management of nuclear material and radioactive sources (tentative date 10 July 2019)

· The human and economic impact of material out of regulatory control


(tentative date 16 October 2019)

· Theme to be determined (tentative date 9 January 2020)

Each panel will comprise a maximum of four experts of which at least two will be from G77 Member States. To the extent possible the panel will comprise experts from Member States with different risk profiles, nuclear and radiological capabilities and socio-economic conditions. The experts will also represent diverse stakeholders: government, regulators and operators, as well as an international expert with previous experience in the IAEA Secretariat (e.g. a former staff member in the Department of Technical Cooperation) who can collectively frame the discussion in terms of the importance of nuclear security for development.
