Supporting organic fruits production and food security through improved fire blight disease management in Kyrgyzstan
The project is aimed to increase sustainable fruit production by introducing modern and fast methods of identification and diagnosis of fire blight disease of pome trees and, to develop environmentally sound methods of plant protection.
The current state of research problem. Fire blight, caused by the bacterium Erwinia amylovora, is an important disease affecting most types of Rosaceae plants and represents an enormous threat to fruit cultivation in many parts of the world. According to EPPO (2012), E. amylovora is currently present in more than 50 countries worldwide. It is a quarantined organism in many countries, including in Kyrgyzstan.Analysis of the status of the problem in the country indicates the need for:
· The research related to taxonomic classification of the Erwinia amylovora local strains by molecular genetic methods.
The impact of the proposed project on the progress in this field of research. The participants of the project offer a multiphasic approach for taxonomic classification of the strains of Erwinia sp (phenotypic characterization, PCR amplification, Plasmid profile, 16S rDNA sequencing, DNA-DNA hybridization).
Author of this project offers high effective biological agents on the basis of Streptomyces sp. that already have bio tested against shoot fire blight in the orchards of Chy region, which will be further tested for biological activity in different regions of the country.
Thus, the proposed project provides a progress in solving two ecological problems:
1. To solve the problem of timely diagnosis of wild and cultivated forms of apples, pears and other Rosaceae plants, indication and monitoring of ecological stability of natural and agro fruit diversity in different mountainous ecosystems of Kyrgyzstan .
2. To provide a healthy food by supporting farmers focused on the production of organic fruits by recommending effective biological agents to reduce fire blight outbreaks.
The competence of the project participants in this area. The project is based on the long-term experience of scientists from Kyrgyzstan working in the fields of microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and biotechnology, as well as on the experience of sensitive knowledge scientists in the field of biological weapons. This is confirmed by the available publications and presentations at international conferences, which are available on the organization’s website: http://www.manas.kg.
