Development of measures for the prevention of leptospirosis in human and animals using modern molecular methods of diagnostics in the countries of Central Asia

Project Status: 3 Approved without Funding
Duration in months: 36 months

Objective

Leptospirosis people and animals in the Republic of Tajikistan is a global problem requiring urgent solutions. Currently, there are no material means of modern laboratory, diagnostic tools and practical knowledge of medical and veterinary professionals in the Republic of Tajikistan.

The project contributes to the practical implementation of solutions to combat the disease zooantroponoznym - Leptospirosis is a strategic response to the epidemic and epizootic diseases. The main route of transmission of water. Leptospirosis in the Republic of Tajikistan is a common infectious disease of animals and humans. The incidence is high, more than half of cases occurs in severe form and required resuscitation. In recent years, Tajikistan has been registered a large number of outbreaks in animals and humans, which began to die from leptospirosis. In severe cases, and delays in seeking medical care, the disease ends in death of the patient. Mortality from leptospirosis is about 10%. Carriers of dangerous infections are gray rats and blood-sucking insects.

The project is focused on the global unified modernization of public health for the early detection and prevention of the spread of leptospirosis in humans and animals. Carrying improve the effectiveness of measures to protect public and animal health from leptospirosis. In response to the epidemic and epizootic will attend partner institutions, which will be engaged in carrying out a joint search for the key etiological factors and pathways of leptospirosis in the wild of the Republic of Tajikistan. Therefore, there is need to establish a specialized diagnostic reference laboratory for leptospirosis, which will deal with the diagnosis and monitoring of leptospirosis in the Republic of Tajikistan and, if necessary, in the neighboring countries of Central Asia.

The purpose of the project organization and conduct of modern molecular genetic methods of diagnostics and timely prevention of leptospirosis in Tajikistan, which will contribute to the development of strategies to combat leptospirosis; Organization for leptospirosis global surveillance, including the use of molecular genetic technologies. Create specialized diagnostic reference laboratory for leptospirosis, which with the help of the high functionality of modern laboratory diagnostics international standards and requirements, potential impact on the implementation of a broad study of people, animals, water reservoirs and agricultural food products for leptospirosis. The project includes the development of proposals on the safety of food products and their ingredients in the manufacture, processing, transportation, storage and marketing.

There is a lack of knowledge on the types of leptospirosis circulating in the region of Central Asia.

The proposed project will provide important information not only for Tajikistan, but also neighboring countries, and can also serve as a model for other regions of Central Asia for the supervision and control of leptospirosis.

The ultimate goal of the project is to prevent leptospirosis in domestic animals and humans in the Republic of Tajikistan
