The ISTC together with Moscow Physics & Technology Institute (MIPT) and with support of the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), organized a thematic workshop, Extremal and Record-Breaking Flights of UAVs and Aircraft with Electrical Power Plants on the 23rd and 26th of August 2013 at ISTC’s headquarters. ISTC Executive Director Leo Owsiacki opened the sessions which focused on presentations of achievements and discussion of ideas and proposals on how to improve technical characteristics of UAVs, such as flight duration, distance, altitude of flights, carrying capacity, effectiveness, etc.

A keynote speech was given by Prof. Kenzo Nonami from Chiba University, Japan who reviewed Japanese activities on UAVs, presented the advanced technologies of fully autonomous multi-rotor helicopters, and informed about theMini-surveyor consortium aimed at building of industry-university-government collaboration to speed up commercialization of the multi-rotor helicopter for industrial applications.

The workshop provided an international platform for presentations and discussions of the current state of UAVs achievements and highlighted problems for discussion at the "round tables”, such as innovations in aeronautics, particularly in the UAV area, and involving young people into aerospace science. 

The Program Committee selected 33 papers for oral presentations at eight technical sessions.

In total, 63 experts from 21 scientific institutes, universities and aerospace-related companies took part in the Workshop. This included participants from Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, the Russian Federation, the United States and Vietnam. Various papers were presented on behalf of international teams of researchers.

Presentations related to general overviews of UAVs activities and problems, CFD, wind tunnel tests, low Reynolds problems, avionics, design, aerodynamics, flight dynamics and “unconventional” flying vehicles.

During the introduction, the ISTC Executive Director mentioned that ISTC has funded more than 100 projects with a total value of $30 million USD related to aerospace research. These projects cover a wide range of areas such as aeronautics, manned and unmanned spacecraft, space safety, extraterrestrial exploration, spacecraft trajectories and many others including the space debris problem. 95 of these projects were implemented at 87 Russian institutes and 8 at other CIS institutes.
