TRAINING THE TRAINERS WORKSHOP ON STRATEGIC TRADE CONTROL ACADEMIC IMPLEMENTATION IN KAZAKHSTAN
On 06-07 June 2022 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, the Central Asian Institute for Development Studies (CAIDS) in collaboration with the Satbayev University (SU), the Kazakh-British Technical University (KBTU), and the University of International Business (UIB) held the Training the Trainers Workshop under the second phase of the project of Strategic Trade Control (STC) Research and Education Implementation in Kazakhstan. This workshop is implemented under a larger EU funded Targeted Initiave (TI) on CBRN Export Control Dual-Use Materials and Technologies.
The workshop was designed to disseminate teaching and research skills related to STC among the technical and social experts and scientists who hold teaching and research positions at SU, KBTU, UIB, the Kyrgyz National University (KNU), and other higher education institutions of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
Dr. Hendrik Visser, Partner Project Manager at the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) opened the event with the welcoming speech. The participants were also welcomed by Dr. Aliya Toregeldinova, the head of the Department of Management and Mathematical Economics of Satbayev University, Dr. Yerzhan Mukashev, the dean of KBTU Business School, Dr. Abeuova Shuga, head of the chair of social and humanitarian sciences of UIB, Jyldyz Sydygalieva, director of the Center on Export Controls (Kyrgyzstan), Dr. Arkabaeva Gulzyinat, Scientific Secretary of The Kyrgyz National University.
During the event Prof. Jean-Pascal Zanders (The TRENCH) and Prof. Quentin Michel from Liege University (Belgium) shared their knowledge and experience related to the research and education in STC. Prof. Zanders made an introduction to the ‘dual-use’ concept, outlined the main aspects of the governance of dual-use technologies at the international and the national levels. Professor Quentin Michel introduced to the topic of essential responsibilities for different categories of actors. Prof. Zanders also presented a review of existing university degree programs launched in this field under the Targeted Initiative (TI) CBRN Export Control Dual-Use Materials and Technologies Project manager, which was prepared by Dr. Maria J. Espona (Project Manager of the TI).
The workshop encouraged more than 40 workshop attendees by introducing new ideas in teaching and research. Young fellows discovered new opportunities in the forthcoming education programs in STC at the mentioned participating universities. The participants also discussed the new challenges and perspectives for future collaboration and networking among the universities through Strategic Trade Control academic proliferation.
