ISTC Technical Update: Strategic Planning for Sustainable Nuclear Energy through IAEA’s INPRO Tools

The International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) highlights the upcoming Joint ICTP-IAEA INPRO School, a specialized program designed to help Member States build localized expertise in nuclear energy sustainability.

The INPRO Concept: A Holistic Approach

The International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO) has pioneered a unique set of decision-support tools. Unlike traditional technical courses, this School focuses on the formulation of national strategies by introducing the INPRO concept of sustainability across six critical pillars:

  • Economics & Infrastructure: Assessing the financial and structural feasibility of nuclear programs.

  • Waste Management & Environment: Strategies for long-term ecological stewardship.

  • Safety: Focusing on both reactor and fuel cycle safety.

  • Proliferation Resistance: Ensuring nuclear growth aligns with global security standards.

Training Framework and Methodology

The curriculum is built around the INPRO Methodology for Sustainability Assessment, providing participants with hands-on experience in modeling and analyzing complex nuclear energy systems (NES).

Main Elements of the Course Practical Applications
Energy Planning Strategies Integrating nuclear within broader sustainable development goals.
Sustainability Assessment Applying the INPRO methodology to national scenarios.
Innovation & Modeling Using advanced tools to evaluate SMRs and future fuel cycles.
Applied Exercises Real-world projects to test strategic planning competencies.

Who Should Attend?

The INPRO School is tailored for professionals pursuing a career in strategic nuclear energy planning. The ISTC encourages the following profiles within our network to apply:

  • Decision Makers: Managers of nuclear energy organizations and experts in international relations.

  • Analysts: Energy planning professionals, nuclear engineers, and researchers.

  • Educators: University faculty and instructors from centers of excellence.
