On 15 February 2012, the US-ISTC Governing Board Member Mr. Simon Limage visited an ISTC project at the National Center of Biotechnology in Astana, Kazakhstan.

This visit was part of an overall outreach program. 

Information was given on a project supported by the US on the development of a new medicine in the fight against cancer. 

The aim of the project is to develop a new compound via biological means that prevents tumor activity (anti-tumor activity).

Screening of potential new compounds took place both in Kazakhstan and the United States.

The project will finish during the course of the year.

It has promising results that has already drawn the interest of the pharmaceutical industry. 

Kazakhstan is a member of ISTC since 1994. So far ISTC has funded 191 projects covering a wide range of scientific areas with a total value of 66 million USD. 

ISTC also carries out specific technologies transfer projects in Kazakhstan for example in close cooperation with the National Innovation Fund of Kazakhstan.
