ISTC supports projects in Kurchatov / Semipalatinsk and welcomes the UNGA Resolution on the rehabilitation of the region

The ISTC welcomes the news that the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly has approved on 20 November 2017 by consensus the Resolution on international cooperation and coordination of efforts aimed at the rehabilitation of the population, the environmental restoration, and economic development of the Semipalatinsk region in Kazakhstan. Since 1995 ISTC has supported more than 24 projects in that area through cooperation with five leading Institutes, linked to the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Kurchatov and the Semipalatinsk test site, totalling over USD 10 miillion dealing with; but not limited to such issues as environmental management, radionuclides, spent fuel disposal, radiation risks, decontamination and remediation.

The ISTC continues to support and cooperate with Kazakhstan and international partners on a number of active projects as part of its Mission for cooperative Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) risk mitigation and to address the global security threat of the proliferation of applicable CBRN knowledge and materials;

Being itself at the heart of a global network of scientific communities, ISTC is a staunch supporter and advocate, in fact, even a catalyst, for enhanced and concerted international efforts to mobilize resources and recruit expertise to remedy the dreadful consequences of nuclear weapons testing that has caused immense human suffering and environmental degradation at the test site at Semipalatinsk, as well as in many other test grounds.
