article

ISTC supported participation of the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) in the Second Session of the Preparatory Committee for the 11th NPT Review Conference at United Nations offices in Geneva, Switzerland from July 22 through August 2. AFCONE Executive Secretary Mr. Enobat Agboraw and expert Mr. Olamide Samuel attended. Supporting science and research professionals as Mr. Agboraw and Mr. Samuel is central to the ISTC’s overall mission of peaceful and multilateral science and technology collaboration for a safer, secure and sustainable planet.

AFCONE plays an important role in aligning Africa’s Common Defense and Security Policy with the goals and obligations of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, often referred to as NPT. This integration strengthens the continent's ability to address common security threats and safeguards Africa’s interests through promotion of peace, security and stability. In the report attached to this post, AFCONE summarizes and analyzes discussions and results of the NPT’s Preparatory Committee in July and August as they pertain to Africa’s perspective. NPT is a cornerstone of the global nuclear non-proliferation regime. It entered into force on March 5, 1970 and, in accordance with NPT’s Article VIII (3), member countries convene every five years in Review Conferences to examine the NPT’s implementation and decisions of past Review Conferences and agree on the way forward. This Preparatory Committee meeting, as the name suggests, prepares for the next Review Conference in 2026 which will serve as a platform for NPT member countries to promote NPT objectives and address disarmament, non-proliferation and peaceful use of nuclear energy.
