On 18th -19th May, ISTC senior project manager, Takatsugu Mihara participated in the International Workshop, “30th Anniversary of Scientific -Technical Cooperation in Peaceful Use of Atomic Energy” held in the National Nuclear Center (NNC) of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in Kurchatov. The WS was implemented in a hybrid way (in person with online). After the opening remarks, Dr. Erlan Gadletovich Batyrbekov, Director General of NNC, made a comprehensive presentation on the history of NNC, closing the Semipalatinsk Test Site (STS) and continues observation and remediation works in STS up to now, as well as their wide range nuclear research and development activities with the collaboration of foreign collaborators such as Japan, US, and Russia. There were a lot of technical presentation by foreign researches informing peaceful research collaboration such as enhancing proliferation characteristics and utilization of NNC’s facilities with specific and valuable features. Mr. Mihara explained in his short presentation that since 1995 the ISTC has funded 68 NNC projects worth around $ 25 million. He also insisted that harmonization with safety, security, safeguards and environmental protection is indispensable & fundamental requisites for exploiting nuclear technology and NNC can strengthen such a foundation through ISTC collaboration. The 2nd day of the WS included the poster session in which young researches were discussing enthusiastically with the participants, his/her research topics, results and future works. Some of them asked the possibility of ISTC support in future.
