ISTC Receives Acknowledgement at an AFCONE Forum on Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy

article

Two ISTC partners – the African Commission on   Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) and the professional     network African Youth Generation in Nuclear (AYGN) –    organized on 31 March 2021 a virtual forum entitled:     Building for Safe and Secure Development in Africa of   Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy including Nuclear   Power. High level representatives of the African Union,   the IAEA, AFRA, and FNRBA provided different   perspectives on the subject matters during discussions   comprising topical and pressing issues for the continent and for its new generation of scholars, researchers, and practitioners. Participants reached a conclusion that there should be a paradigm shift in Africa in the direction of a sustained dynamic development programme, including through efficient contribution of the youth. The young generation is capable to ensure effective, safe, and secure peaceful nuclear applications, pursuing excellence in education and training, and in research and development.

These messages were present in the remarks by Sarah Mbi Enow Anyang, African Union Commissioner for Human Resources, Science and Technology and the IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.

On several occasions the ISTC received   acknowledgement for the contribution it makes to   capacity-building in Africa through its projects in   nuclear safety and security. This was underlined in the   intervention of AYGN President Mr Gaopalelwe   Santswere, in many comments, and most ostensibly -   in the comprehensive presentation by Dr. Naphtali   Mokgalapa entitled: 2030 & Beyond Vision:   Contribution of the AYGN to the Excellence in NST Capacity Building. In its retrospective component, the AYGN leader emphasized that ISTC was a reliable partner to AYGN from the outset of the continental network, and the cooperative ties will be further strengthened, as the Center is about to establish a presence locally, through admitting in its membership interested African states.
