The Governing Board of the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) is pleased to announce the appointment nomination of Ms. Karina Angelieva as the new Executive Director of the organisation, effective February 1, 2025.

Ms. Angelieva brings a wealth of experience in international relations and diplomacy, science and technology policy, and senior management to her new role. She has a strong track record of achievement in promoting international scientific cooperation and innovation, and has worked closely with governments, international organzations, academia and industries to advance these goals.  Her expertise, experience, skills and vision will be instrumental in driving the ISTC's mission forward and ensuring its continued success in promoting international scientific cooperation and preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Of Bulgarian citizenship, Ms. Angelieva holds Master's degree in European Studies and in Contemporary History from the Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski. Previous senior appointments include Deputy Minister of innovation and growth, Deputy Minister of education and science, Head of Cabinet of the minister of energy, Head of Department education and research at the Bulgarian Permanent Representation to the EU, Brussels, Director-General EU programmes and structural funds, Ministry of education and science, and Director of the Joint Innovation Center of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

Ms. Angelieva commented: "Following my nomination by the European Union, I’m delighted with the ISTC Governing Board's appointment. During my tenure as the ISTC’s Chief Executive Officer I shall be looking forward to leading the further development and shaping of the ISTC’s reach and to maximise its impact on global security, peace, sustainability and growth. In doing so, I'll be able to rely on a professional international staff and on the continued commitment of ISTC‘s Parties".

The ISTC would like to take this opportunity to express its gratitude to Mr. David Cleave, who has served as Executive Director of the organization since 2014. Under his leadership, the ISTC has achieved significant milestones and made important contributions to the fields of responsible science, safety and security.
