ISTC Co-Sponsors an International Conference on Biological Safety, Supports the Regional Council of Scientists for Combating Epidemiological Threats
On 22 September a two-day International Conference “Current Problems of Biological Safety in the Modern Conditions» began its work online, with the participation of dozens of scientists and researchers from ISTC countries in Central Asia and other parts of the world. It is organized by the Nazarbayev University, the JSC "Science Fund", the ALMA University (ALMAU) and the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC), with the support of the Ministries of Education and Science, and of Healthcare of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In his welcoming remarks ISTC Deputy Executive Director Aidyn Turebayev pointed out the priority ISTC attaches to scientific collaboration among researchers and medical experts on the challenges of COVID pandemic. Other officials speaking at the opening echoed this massage: Aryn Orsariyev, Chairman of the Board of "Science Fund" JSC; Massimo Pignatelli, Dean of the School of Medicine Nazarbayev University, Bakytzhan Sarkeyev, Vice-Rector, ALMAU.
Bakytzhan Sarkeyev is also the Chairman of the Regional Council of Scientists (RCS) for combating epidemiological threats. Based in Almaty, RCS came into existence with ISTC support last December, uniting leading scientists from Kazakhstan, Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The current conference is the first of a series RSC intends to hold annually to facilitate the exchange of information on ongoing scientific research in the field of combating epidemics in the region and individual countries and to strengthen cooperation between scientists and scientific institutions.
The program of the conference envisages contributions by presenters involved in other relevant ISTC projects, such as Prof. Dr. Firuza Nasyrova, Head of the Biosafety Laboratory, Institute of Botany, Physiology and Plant Genetics, Tajikistan National Academy of Science, who leads the project “Raising awareness and responsibility of scientists in the life sciences” with the Tajik Association for Biological Security. The external consultant of it, Dr. Maria J Espona, Co-director, Argentina Information Quality, will also make an intervention at the conference on the topic International Legal Framework on Disease Outbreaks and Surveillance.
