ISTC and VERTIC host an online Forum for university faculty and students within the “Project Building Capacity on Multilateral Verification of Nuclear Disarmament”, on June 15-16.
ISTC and VERTIC organized on 15-16 June 2021 an online Forum for university faculty and students on the topics “Nuclear Weapons Nonproliferation Regime and Disarmament” and “The IAEA – System of Safeguards and Verification of Nuclear Disarmament”.
The keynote speaker on the topic was Dr. Timur Zhantikin, Candidate of Ph.-Math. Sciences, member of the Pugwash Committee of Kazakhstan, General Director of the company “Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Plants”. He provided insights from the Nuclear proliferation regime in the world, from the beginning of the nuclear weapon era to the problems of nuclear disarmament. Dr. Zhantikin answered questions related to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, including the planned construction of the NPP in Kazakhstan. He also described problems in promoting of Cut-off Treaty – the position of nuclear-weapon states and the experience of non-nuclear-weapon participants of NPT, and the Verification of disarmament in Kazakhstan.
The meeting was attended by students, masters and young specialists from the L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, the Nazarbayev University, the Narxoz University, the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the Shakarim University, the Kazakh-American Free University, the Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology, the K.Zhubanov Aktobe Regional University, the Institute of atomic energy, NAK "Kazatomprom", the Ulba Metallurgical Plant JSC, the Mangistau atom electric complex (MAEC), the Association of "Nuclear Society of Kazakhstan" and the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The total number of participants was 50.
