Health Security Partners (HSP) together with ISTC organised a joint workshop in Astana, Kazakhstan
On September 18-20, 2024, a 3-day workshop was held on “Bioethics and Dual Use in Life Science Research: Sharing Good Practices for Institutional Oversight” in Astana, Kazakhstan. The workshop was organized by Health Security Partners (HSP) in collaboration and support with the International Science and Technology Centre (ISTC).
The workshop was led by subject matter expert, Dr. Tatyana Novossiolova from the Center of Study of Democracy and Dr. Lora Grainger from Project Safe Lab. Eleven academia, laboratory, medical, and research, from across Kazakhstan participated in the workshop. They participated in lectures, case study-based exercises, and breakout group discussions. Participants identified gaps and challenges in dual-use and bioethics in their institutions. Based on these gaps, they recognized possible solutions.
Participants who attended the workshop will have the opportunity to apply for challenge grants following the workshop. These grants will support participants in the implementation and improvement of dual-use and bioethics strategies at their respective institutions. Regional learning and sharing of experience from this workshop are encouraged to improve gaps in dual-use and bioethics.
We thank all participants and speakers for their active engagement throughout the workshop and willingness to share their knowledge in dual-use and bioethics.
