EVENT | ISTC–European Commission Cooperation at GC70

During the 70th IAEA General Conference in Vienna, the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) held a high-level meeting with representatives of the European Commission to discuss the further development of cooperation between ISTC and the European Union.

The meeting focused on ISTC's current portfolio and its role in supporting EU-funded scientific, technical and capacity-building initiatives in Central Asia and beyond.

Particular attention was given to the prospective EU–ISTC initiative on radioactive waste management in Kazakhstan. Discussions covered Kazakhstan's priorities and institutional capacity-building needs, the potential involvement of European technical institutions and organizations, and possible next steps towards project development and future EU funding and implementation arrangements.

The meeting also addressed broader areas of potential cooperation, including:

• Strengthening cooperation between European institutions, ISTC and regional partners • Technical and human-capacity needs of the partner countries
  • Radioactive waste management
  • Regional scientific cooperation and technology transfer

ISTC Executive Director Karina Anguelieva had the pleasure of meeting Ms Marjeta Jager, Deputy Director-General of the European Commission's Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA), and Mr Michael Huebel, Acting Deputy Director-General for Coordination of Euratom Policies and Director-General of the Euratom Supply Agency, DG ENER.

ISTC sincerely appreciates their time, hospitality and constructive engagement, as well as the European Commission's continued interest in strengthening cooperation with ISTC.

We look forward to continuing the dialogue and working together to translate these discussions into concrete initiatives supporting ISTC countries and the wider regional partners.
