EU establishes new European Cybersecurity Competence Centre in Bucharest
Brussels / Bucharest, 14 October 2025 — The European Commission has officially inaugurated the European Cybersecurity Competence Centre (ECCC) in Bucharest, Romania, marking a major milestone in Europe’s efforts to strengthen its resilience and strategic autonomy in the digital sphere.
The Centre will coordinate EU and Member State investments in cybersecurity research, innovation, and industrial development, fostering closer cooperation between governments, academia, and the private sector. It aims to enhance Europe’s capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to emerging cyber threats, while supporting training, skills development, and the creation of a robust cybersecurity ecosystem.
As part of the EU’s broader agenda on security, technology, and resilience, the ECCC will serve as a central hub to channel funding, share best practices, and implement joint projects. This initiative reflects Europe’s growing commitment to ensuring that technological progress and digital transformation go hand in hand with security and trust.
The International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) welcomes this significant development, which resonates with its own mission to promote safe, responsible, and collaborative innovation across partner countries. The ISTC stands ready to explore potential synergies with the ECCC and other European partners in areas such as cybersecurity capacity-building, digital resilience, and science diplomacy.
