The International School on Theoretical Physics "Quantum Physics on micro- and macrolevels: New Frontiers" was held on September 23 – 29, 2012.
The International School on Theoretical Physics "Quantum physics on micro- and macrolevels: new frontiers" was held at the rest house „Yunost“, Moscow region, Russia, on September 23 – 29, 2012. The school was organized by NRNU MEPhI with support of the ISTC.
The program of the school provided a possibility to the young scientists starting their research work in theoretical physics to get acquainted with the state of the art in this segment of physics, including the most important present-day problems and research perspectives
(https://docs.google.com/a/theor.mephi.ru/document/d/1ivnav_sTb1oGmrNDAGXS4EHKE-XYGi030Uq_QXkie-o/edit?pli=1).
The school brought together 59 participants from 5 countries, including Russia, Germany, Italy, Finland, and Ukraine. The leading Russian and foreign physicists delivered lectures associated with the four research fields of contemporary theoretical physics, including:
- physics of superstrong electromagnetic fields;
- relativistic astrophysics and cosmology;
- modern problems of solid state physics and nanophysics;
- physics of elementary particles and fundamental interactions.
All of the lecturers are well known for their essential contribution into the corresponding research field, their work is recognized by the international scientific community.
Presentations and videos of the lectures are now posted on the NRNU MEPhI theoretical department website
(for more detailed information refer to http://theor.mephi.ru/sem/school-12/ ).
A special Session, devoted to the activities in the framework of the ISTC Targeted Initiative “Ultra-High Intensity Light Science and Technologies” was conducted as a part of the School scientific program. Four lectures given within this topic presented an overview of the presently existing powerful laser facilities, also of those under construction and development. These lectures were delivered by S.Garanin (Russian Federal Nuclear Center, VIIEF, Sarov) and A. Sergeev (Applied Physics Institute RAS, API RAS, Nizhny Novgorod). Two more lectures (V. Bychenkov, Lebedev Physics Institute RAS and H. Ruhl, University of Munich) provided an overview of the state of the art in the theory of laser-plasma interaction at ultrahigh intensities. The scope of the Session seems to be particularly relevant, because several of these super-powerful laser facilities either operate (or being under construction or development) in Russia or abroad (in an essential collaboration with Russian research institutions and universities).
The School program included discussions of the lecture material and, in general, of contemporary problems of theoretical physics. Apart from that several important meetings took place during the school period. The meetings could be of importance in view of the further development of international scientific cooperation, and in terms of promotion of a system to support international research and educational projects and integration of the Russian educational system into large-scale research and engineering projects being performed at the Russian research institutions and think tanks, including the Federal Nuclear Research Center VNIIEF. In particular, the discussions were focused on the plans to develop and construct petawatt laser facilities at the Russian research centers and on cooperation of the Russian institutions on the state and academic levels with the European ELI project (Extreme Light Infrastructure).
