The Autumn International School for Young Scientists “High Field Science - Kyoto 2012” was held at Kansai Photon Science Institute (KPSI) of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), Japan, on November 12 – 15, 2012.
The Autumn International School for Young Scientists “High Field Science - Kyoto 2012” (Momiji School), was held at Kansai Photon Science Institute (KPSI) of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), Kizugawa-city, Kyoto, Japan, on November 12 – 15, 2012.
The Momiji School was organized by KPSI jointly with the International Science and Technology Center.
The purpose of the Autumn School was to address studies of basic science problems associated with laser-plasma interactions, as well as industrial applications and applications to medical diagnostics and hadron therapy.
Within the symposium program special topics, related to the laser driven accelerators of charged particles and the laser driven coherent and incoherent x-ray sources with their applications were addressed. As it relates to basic research in quantum field physics and astrophysics, special attention was paid to the generation of super intense electromagnetic waves and to super intense static magnetic fields in high power laser - matter interactions.
The total number of young scientist – participants of the school was more then 40. The six leading Russian scientists from large research centers like VNIIEF (Sarov), State Optical Institute named after Vavilov (Saint-Petersburg), Prokhorov General Physics Institute of RAS (Moscow), and Russian National Nuclear University “MEPhI” (Moscow) dwelt on challenging present-day aspects of the high-field science in their lectures, exploring, in particular, the fundamental properties of vacuum with super strong laser fields, concept of Russian megajoule laser driver and adaptive optics in high power laser, laser methods of ultra-short megavoltage terahertz pulse generation and their prospective applications, etc.
The format of the event gave give young scientists a unique opportunity not only to acquire new knowledge but also to approach many world renowned scientists from Russia, Korea, Germany and Japan to exchange views and ideas with them.
Summing up the results of the School it is necessary to emphasize that discussions the participants have had helped to add new stones to the building we are all constructing – solution of global scientific and technical problems through international science cooperation.
On other hand a topic High Field Science fits well into the subject of the ISTC Targeted Initiative “Ultra-High Intensity Light Science and Technology” launched by the decision of the ISTC Governing Board in 2008. Since that time the Center has supported various projects and events, such as conferences, workshops and young scientists schools, correlating in many ways with the subject of the Kyoto Young Scientists School of 2012. In the framework of this Initiative JAEA and ISTC have already organized jointly an event at the Kansai Photon Science Institute.
In May 2011 Kansai Institute in cooperation with the ISTC and with the assistance of MEXT organized the 3rd International Symposium “Laser-Driven Relativistic Plasmas Applied to Science, Energy, Industry, and Medicine”.
It looks believable that the collaboration between JAEA and Russian institutes in ultra-high intensity lasers for civil applications will be begun or strengthened than ever.
