1-4 October 2007, Lisbon, Portugal- ISTC and STCU (Science and Technology Center in Ukraine) have organised a science workshop in partnership with Portugal’s R&D group Instituto de Soldadura e Qualidade. The workshop was held in the Lisbon region of Portugal and took place to coincide with the Portugal Presidency meeting of the European Union.

European Union officials and representatives of the Portuguese business and scientific communities attended the event, at which ISTC and STCU presented a team of expert scientists from Russia, Ukraine, and other countries of the CIS. The principle aim of the event was to create a greater awareness and business linkages between the Portuguese and European participants and their CIS colleagues working in R&D. Among the research subjects discussed were: non-destructive technologies, development of sensors for energy and manufacturing, molecular biology (design, development and production of biochips), nanotechnologies and information technologies (IT) applied to digital medicine, environment and security.

Bilateral meetings were held during the colloquium, notably in the fields of non-destructive technologies (laser, optical diagnostics, vibroacoustic measurements), and possible applications useful to the oil/gas industry and power engineering were examined. The Portuguese participants in particular expressed interest in a number of ISTC’s digital medicine projects.

The host organization, Instituto de Soldadura e Qualidade (ISQ), committed to intensify its partnership with ISTC and STCU. Discussions will focus on developing ISQ’s engagement with the capabilities and technological expertise of the Russian, Ukranian, and Belarussian research centers which were represented at the event.
