GOAL OF THE PROJECT: Monitoring of the radiation safety of the human ecosystem and creation of the cadastre of radiation safety of the districts on Radon content, products of its daughter decay and other radioactive isotopes in the air, soil, vegetations, water sources of the mountain massive of upper reaches of Amy Darya river (Pamir) on the territory of Tajikistan and Afghanistan. The present project is a part of the regional project and is devoted to the study of the radio-ecological environment of the mountain regions of the Pamir on the territory of Tajikistan and Afghanistan, and Tien Shan on Kyrgyzstan.
For mountain regions of the Central Asia possess many common features: relatively southern inland location, arid climate, youth mountain relief, absolute and relatively high mountains, tectonic and seismic activity and bioclimatic conditions. There large amount of various useful fossils and mineral wealth (like uranium, tin, molybdenum, tungsten, lead, gold and others), thermal and mineral sources are concentrated in the mountain subsoil of the Central Asia. The mountain system “Pamir” in Tajikistan and Afghanistan, and “Tien Shan” in Kyrgyzstan due to their likeness frequently united into a single system “The Pamir – Tien Shan”. These three adjacent countries are similar by their geographical location, lay of land, climate, natural and vegetative world, environmental and ecological conditions.
Pamir and Tien Shan mountains are small by territory, the major part of territory are relatively young mountains, in subsoil and surface of theirs (in caves, deep gorges, hollows, and natural hollows, water sources, rivers and etc.) emanation of Radon-222 is accumulated, which with the other products of its daughter decays and other radio-nuclides creates a natural radiation background that ruinously affects on to the animal and vegetable world. In mountain territory, due to natural conditions suitable for habitation and vital functions of population, is hollows, gorges, mountain pedestals are exactly the places that are considered as the places that improper from the point of view of radiation safety.
Study of the measurement methods approaches on content of Radon, products of its daughter decays and other radio-nuclides in the environment. Development of the measurements methods. Studying the functioning Norms and State Standards.
• Reconnaissance of research terrain on results of preliminary measurement of radiation background (by gamma-shooting), detection of polluted settlements with increased radiation load, linking them by the GPS and GIC systems.
• Measurement of Radon concentration in the air, soil, water, directly in habitation places, (lower floors of the residential rooms, basements, subsidiary placements and etc.) and vital functions (work places, cultural establishments, children’s gardens, schools and etc.), air sampling, soil sampling, vegetation and water sampling for spectrometric researches.
• Monitoring of the season variations of Radon in the air, soil, water, straight in residential places and around them, and exposure of their dependence on meteorological and climatic conditions.
• Spectrometric analysis of selected samples of soil surfaces, vegetations, water on content daughter decay products of Radon and other radioisotopes in labs of Academy of Sciences of Republic of Tajikistan.
• Detection of the places with the heightened content of Radon, products of its daughter decay and other radio-nuclides in the investigated zones.
• Creation of the cadastre of radiation safety of mountain terrains of the Pamir.
• Researching the local natural resources, which used as a raw material for production of construction and trimming materials (cement, alabaster, marble, crushed stone and etc.) on contents in them of radioisotopes and research their radio-ecological safety.
• Working out of recommendations about possibilities of local natural resources use as a raw material in production of construction and trimming materials with a glance of confirmed normative documents.
• Approbation of obtained results in scientific publications and forums.
• Coordination of researches and obtained results with colleagues from Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan.
• Organization joint seminars and trainings. Cross inspection of samples and obtained data. Exchange information about radio-ecological situation in border districts.
A commercial analytic laboratory for monitoring of the radiation safety conditions of the mountain terrains on the base of the laboratories of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan will be created. This laboratory will needs for additional financial and methodical support of International Atomic Energy Agency for equipment procurement.
• In further the staff of the laboratory in the frame of commercialization of the received equipment and results will be able to conducting the radiation monitoring of the residential and uninhabited areas under the order of private individuals and enterprises.
• On the base of Radon-metrical research results directly in residential places and vital areas of population and spectrometric researches of selected samples at the lab zones with increased radiation background will be revealed.
• As a result of the research the statistical facts on the dynamics of the seasonal variations of radiation load on local population will be obtained.
• As a result a cadastre of radiation safety of mountain terrain of Pamir on the territory of the Tajikistan and northern Afghanistan will be created.
• On the base of research results a certain methodological guidelines and aimed arrangements directed to the development of radiation safety for the population residing in dangerous for health zones will be developed.
• On the base of research results will be developed a certain guidelines about possibilities of local natural resources use as a raw material for manufacturing constructing and trimming materials taking into account requirements of normative documents and State Standards.
• Research results may be used in adjacent fields of science – geophysics, geochemistry, seismology, construction, public health, field of protection of nature and environment.
