The International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) Continuation Agreement was signed in Astana
December 9, 2015 the Agreement on the Continuation of the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) was signed in Astana. From the Kazakh side the document was signed by Minister of Education and Science Mr. A. Sarinzhipov.
International Science and Technology Center is an intergovernmental organization, which includes 38 states. The center was created in 1992 to promote the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
Initially, the Agreement was signed between the European Union, the Russian Federation, the United States and Japan, and later was joined by Armenia, Georgia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Norway, Republic of Korea and Tajikistan. Kazakhstan became a member of the ISTC in 1995.
Only in 2015 70 projects worth $ 18 million were implemented in the framework of the ISTC, as well as accompanying programs in the amount of $ 2.5 million in fields of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear research security, nanotechnology in energy efficiency, healthcare, contaminated areas of nuclear landfills and nuclear waste problem-solving, development of uranium mines.
Special attention is paid to the scientific and technical support for projects in the field of seismic monitoring and prediction of seismic activity in the member countries of the ISTC. In particular, the projects are supported by the ISTC in the field of environment and public health have been implemented in Japan during the process of eliminating consequences of the accident at the "Fukushima".
After signing the Agreement Kazakhstan is officially a host State and the headquarters of the ISTC will be located in Astana, in the building of Nazarbayev University.
