ISTC supports a CERN Summer School in Almaty
The ISTC-CERN-JINR-Kazakhstan Summer School entitled “Introduction to High Energy and Accelerator Physics” took place at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Almaty from 25 through 30 August, 2019.
Previously the Summer School was held at Eurasian National University Lev Gumilyov in Astana, in 2010; at the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva, in 2011 (with participation of nine bachelor’s and master’s degree holders from KazNU); and, at Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, in 2012. These trainings were very successful and arouse high interest amongst young scientists.
The Summer School provides a unique opportunity for young scientists and students to learn from the leading researchers in the field of high energy physics and accelerator technology who are involved in the most advanced researches for development of peaceful uses of nuclear technologies.
The 2019 ISTC-SERN-JINR-Kazakhstan Summer School on High Energy Physics and Accelerator Technology was held at Almaty and jointly organized by ISTC, CERN and JINR with the support of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Ministry of Energy. The program comprised of five days of lectures and hand-on activities. The training was carried out by experts from the University of Tsukuba, Japan; the European Organization for Nuclear Research, Switzerland; the University of Lisbon, Portugal; Missouri University of Science &Technology, USA; the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna, Russia; the University of Science and Technology; and the University of Wroclaw, Poland.
Fifty young scientist, undergraduates, PhD students and postgraduate from several CIS countries attended the event and discussed the recent progress and major themes in high energy physics. The School covered the following topics: High Energy Physics, Accelerator Physics, Quark-gluon plasma, Nuclear Physics and Astrophysics, Condensed Matter Physics, Nuclear Medicine and Medical Physics, Computing and Big Data, Perspectives of LHC.
The participants visited Tien Shan Cosmic Rays Station, and, also, experimental facilities of the Institute Nuclear Physics.
The participants expressed their belief that the strengthening of collaboration between Kazakhstani scientific and educational organizations, CERN, ISTC and JINR will contribute to the future development of international science and education
As an outcome of the course, it was decided to promote the latest research achievements in the field of nuclear control amongst the interested scientific organizations, universities, government agencies and industries.
In a conversation between the CERN representative Tadeusz Kurtyka, Senior Adviser for Non-Member and Associate Member States Relations International Relations Office and ISTC Deputy Execute Director Aidyn Turebayev, CERN expressed desire to expand its cooperation with ISTC.
Upon completion of the School, certificates were issued to the young participants from the CIS countries.
