Краткое описание проекта

Objectives of the present project are:
a) experimental and theoretical investigation how color of various minerals changes under the action of gamma-radiation in the presence of different modifying factors,
b) search for methods of the obtained effect stabilization in time.

From the very beginning this project implementation will go in two interrelated directions:

- experimental direction- i.e.producing various types of color for different groups of minerals as well as search for methods of this color retention;
- research direction- i.e. study of character how lattice changes under the action of radiation (availability and concentrations of various color centers, defects, type-forming ions and admixtures, etc.).

It is our intention to study the formation character and composition of color centers of different types and their aggregation complexes, behavior of admixtures and intervalence interactions of ions in transition metals depending on irradiation mode parameters (dose rate, doses, temperature).

It is planned to develop efficient methods for analyzing and identifying mineral composition, accompanying admixtures and color centers. Classical photometry, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and double electron nuclear resonance (DENR) methods will be used for these purposes.

The essence of this work consists in selecting irradiation modes and, if necessary, subsequent thermal annealing and specified correlations, which are evident when treating defect-impurity associations and intervalence interactions of ions in transition metals. It is intended to apply EPR and DENR methods to identify their composition and concentrations.

This work should result in experimental, scientific and theoretical validation of the possibility to artificially change color of minerals under the action of gammaradiation, as well as in selection of irradiation modes, and development of technique to prepare samples for irradiation, and finally, in the preparation of the illustrated scientific-and-engineering information overview on the possible application of gamma-radiation to change color of minerals for improving their esthetic perception.

The search for methods enabling stabilization of the obtained effect for a long period of time is assumed.

Precise methods to monitor dose and gamma-field homogeneity will be developed for the purpose of quantitative analysis.

These work results will have both scientific interest in the area of radiation solid-state physics, and practical application in jewelry industry.

Potential role of foreign collaborators

Potential role of foreign collaborators consists in rendering various consultations, preparing experts' conclusions on scientific, engineering, and commercial attractiveness of the research done. Cooperation with collaborating companies can serve the basis for the preparation of recommendations on the selection of further research directions, for the provision of information on the current status in the areas of similar research effort in national laboratories of the world and for the identification of foreign institutions and companies directly or indirectly interested in these experimental research, results.
