Nuclear track membranes of polyethylene terephtalate films several micrometers thick are unique filtration materials used in medicine, pharmaceutical and electronic industries for keeping clean rooms sterile, for cleaning or fractionating of gases, liquids or preparations, as well as used in household water filters.

The track membrane's advantages are: small pore size variance, possible production of membranes with pore sizes and porosity to order, a comparatively simple procedure of membrane regeneration. Expansion of the track membrane applications is restrained by low thermal and chemical resistance of polyethylene terephtalate as well as by lack of enterprise's experience of treating such specific filtration materials as porous polymerous films 10 m thick.

Creation of the proposed complex for production and improving both track membranes and filtering units on their basis will allow to extend the field of application of the membranes due to development of filtering units and technologies on inpidual orders of enterprises and institutions.

The scientific significance of etched nuclear tracks investigation is connected with the fact them to be the unique pattern of a regular form channel with pore diameter comparable with characteristic sizes of the field of near-surface forces. It is of interest to investigate the properties of substances in such channels as well as the heat and mass transfer through them.

The nuclear track membranes are suggested to be produced using bombardment of polymerous films with multicharged ions about 1 MeV/amu of energy accelerated on the USTU-UPI 120-cm cyclotron. The regular channels of approximately cylindrical form are produced by chemical treatment of the film along the latent tracks generated by fast ions.

At the first stage the production of sample track membranes with pore sizes 0.03 – 2 m and porosity up to 10% is expected. The project provides for development, making and starting an ion source for highly charged argon ions, try-out of these ion's acceleration technique on the production-type cyclotron, manufacture of the complex for polymerous film irradiation by ions, etching them and checking pore sizes in them. At the second stage possible production of pores with diameter less than 0.03 m is investigated by means of fitting the optimal parameters of the fast ions and the film treatment process. The third stage is carried on with the aim to investigate a possibility to produce high-strong, thermally and chemically resistant filtration materials, e.g., on the basis of metals.
