The environmental situation is one of the critical factors, impacting safety and quality of life in the community. The open water reservoirs are the main sources of the water used ( up to 78%), at that about 59 % of the population use water which doesn’t meet the hygienic requirements. The content of phenol compounds is exceeded in many surface water ponds in Russia. The cause of such situation is industrial waste and wash-out of high-molecular phenols- humic and fulvene acids out of soil, their destruction and formation of low-molecular phenols. Before reaching the consumer, the water is being disinfected by chlorine where phenol compounds are transformed into high-toxic ones, such as chlorophenol.
The most crucial hazard is that alongside with condensation of chlorophenol molecules, extremely dangerous zenobiotics are being generated. Among them there are polychlorated dibenzene-п- - dioxins and dibenzenefurans, MPC of them are several times lower than those of the original chlorophenols. Such type of alkalization processes are typical , for instance, in baking of pastry and confectionery when sodium bicarbonate is used. Thus, there is a high possibility that dioxins will be reach a human’s organism. It should be said that in Russia, unlike European countries and the USA, there is no ecological monitoring for the content of chlorophenols in drinking water. It is also necessary to arrange environmental monitoring for the content of dioxins and their precursors in rivers and sanitary and hygienic control for drinking water ( in water dispensing network) and food products ( produced with the use of such water under the alkalization conditions).
The main purpose of the project is to determine the most informative indicators purposefully to carry out content evaluation of dioxins and their predecessor organic toxicants in drinking water and food products and issue of recommendations for arrangement of their ecological monitoring
Complex chemical-analytical studies will be arranged in the facility of the Research and Production Center for Environmental Monitoring RACEM Ltd. to evaluate the content of dioxins and their predecessor organic toxicants (chlorophenols) in a number of food products, drinking water and surface water sources. Impact of pollutants on water and food products will be studied at the example of the city of Kirov. The peculiarity of the city is the presence of big waterside purification structures located upstream of the city water supply. Advanced analytical laboratory technologies will be used for prospective replication of project results into other regions. At that, the studies will be performed in compliance with the international standards of quality control and assurance.
Under the project, a complex ecological- analytical survey of the entire chain will be performed: starting from the determination of humic and fulvene acids and low-molecular phenols in water reservoirs and ending with calculation of dioxin and chlorophenol concentrations in food products using state-of-the –art laboratory technologies and in compliance with the international standards of quality control and assurance. Thus, under the project, a list of most important indicators will be determined. Based on this list environmental and sanitary-hygienic monitoring for content of dioxins and their predecessor organic toxicants will be organized in inhabited localities.
The obtained results will be used in ecological quality management of territiries within the framework of the regional and federal environmental programs. Availability of the results on RACEM web-site will facilitate public access to the objective information, describing the evaluation of drinking water and food product quality.
