Project summary

During last 10 years swine ascariasis has received wide spreading in the Republic of Armenia, which is determined by small swine-breeding farms making and swine stock abrupt increase here.

Swine keeping in non-specialized buildings, free keeping, swine stock abrupt increase in urban conditions, animal wastes distribution in environment or their throw out into sewerage, incompetent persons dealing with swine breeding, veterinary measures irregular and incorrect realization very often promote the spreading of this invasions disease in the Republic.

According to results of our researches carried out during last years, pigs infestation’s extensivity in the Republic of Armenia was 95-98%. This disease causes swine death or productivity decrease which every year cause great economic damage.

It is known, that the eggs of Ascaris suum, the swine ascariasis’ causative agent, save their viability during 10 years, and they are very stabile to main veterinary disinfectants (e.g. 2 % solution of formalin). It is also known that Ascaris suum eggs can be transmitted by soil, wild and cultured plants, water and other environmental objects not only to obligate host-pig, but also to facultative host-man, and cause different pathological changes in human organism.

The aim of this project is to study the extensivity and intensivity of Ascaris suum infestation in pigs in different regions of Armenia, also to study the contamination of environment and food products of animal and plant origin with this agent’s eggs.
