Project summaryThe aim of the Project – To select probiotic strains (Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria) manifesting an ability to stimulate natural immunity for the production of direct-to-the vat starters used in food processing industry and agriculture.
The Project is prepared in frames of the ISTC Targeted Initiative «Probiotics and Health» and coordinated with the Research Program of the Russian Project «A Development of Technologies for Universal Manufacturing of the Ddirect-to-the Vat Starters for the Biotechnological Industry», which obtained financial support from the Federal Agency on Science and Innovations of Russia under the priority trend «Live Systems» of the Federal Purposive Program «Studies and Developments on Priority Trends of the Scientific-Technological Complex of Russia for 2007-2012». A condition for the realization of the Russian Project is additional off-budget financing. Thus, the given ISTC Project and the mentioned above Russian governmental project are being the first example of co-financing.
During the last two decades a conception of active participation of human symbiotic microflora in supporting of human health, active longevity and prevention of the appearance of many diseases is capturing more and more popularity. Microecological aspects of etiopathogenesis of contemporary diseases are based on the recognition of the fact that symbiotic microflora is being an integral part of the organism, its peculiar extracorporal organ including billions of microorganisms (predominantly, anaerobic ones) and both performing a regulatory function and making a notable contribution into human development and physiology. In the third millennium arrived, a permanent impact of ecologically unfavorable factors of environment, psycho-emotional stresses, radiation exposures, the influence of infectious, industrial toxins, pesticides, antimicrobial preparations and stress agents of other nature on the human organism are followed by a disturbance of it symbiotic microecological system. The spread rate of microecological imbalance among the Globe population is of 95% according to the WHO data. It becomes obvious how important it is to perform timely the correction of human microecological status in order to preserve human health and active longevity.
Numerous scientific teams from different countries are involved into the study of molecular-cellular bases of recurrent infections as well as the conditions and causes of a transfer of non-pathogenic microbiological environment of contemporary man into potentially pathogenic state. This could be connected with a disturbance of human symbiotic microecological system, the consequence of which is a development of secondary immunodeficiencies and lowering of natural immunity level.
At present, multiple methods of human microbial ecology correction have found a practical realization. Among them, the use of a specially selected probiotic microorganisms (principally, the representatives of the normal microflora of alimentary tract entitled as probiotics) as functional nutrition products is being the most widespread. Contemporary concept of the functional nutrition assumes a combination of the ration as such with a simultaneous therapeutic impact of the definite constituents of the consumed foodstuff on the organism. The use of these new approaches enables to influence qualitatively on the health level of the population. The attraction of the use of the foodstuff, the constituent part of which are being the strains of viable probiotic microorganisms, is based on their physiologicality for the human organism and on their total safety. The main attention of the producers of the functional nutrition is exclusively concentrated on microorganism species (lacto-, bifidobacteria, etc.) present in human microbiocoenoses. A search for probiotic new strain formula possessing definite target properties is continuously performed by the leading producers of functional nutrition products. A wide spectrum of Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria is available for the Project participants. The study of their probiotic properties is rather actually for a search for strains perspective for a manufacturing on their base of new products for functional nutrition possessing an ability to stimulate innate immunity.
Genotyping and analysis of probiotic properties of lactobacillus (Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria) will be performed in frames of the Project. Based on physiologic-biochemical properties and biologic activity, a selection of applicable candidates will be performed from the number of the studied probiotic isolates for their further use in the industrial technology of direct-to-the vat starters and creation of new products for functional nutrition.
The IIE have all conditions to conduct experiments on animals. The animal house is certified in compliance with laws relating to veterinary science of the RF.
Specialists to be involved have great theoretical and practical experience in the area of application of probiotics in medicine and veterinary, research on antibiotic resistance, isolation of probiotics and testing them immunomodulating activity (innate immunity, inflammation, atherosclerosis inhibition).
