Project summaryPurpose. Investigation of biologically active compounds found in the flora of Kyrgyzstan in order to discover and develop potential active drug candidates against cancer and infectious diseases.
Current status. Studies have shown that, given different growing conditions (For example: soil, location, or altitude), the chemical conditions within plants and their biological activities vary widely. Some plants endemic to Kyrgyzstan that grow above 1,500 meters above sea level show a wide range of pharmacological properties. For example, the extract of the local plant known as “Ooh Korgoshun” (Aconitum karakolicum—“Issyk Kul Aconite”) is used in the treatment of tumors of the gastrointestinal tract and colon as well as a treatment for rheumatism, pneumonia, tooth pain, and other ailments.
Folk healers also prepare remedies from the extracts of the herb Round-leafed Aconite (Aconitum rotundifolium), which locals call “Ak Kodol”. Warm milk is added and the mix is used as a treatment for cancer. Research of drugs based on natural compounds isolated from plants endemic to Kyrgyzstan was not effectively conducted. Therefore, research of flora in Kyrgyzstan should be expanded.
The project’s influence on progress in this area. Should the project be successful, the discovery and development of drugs for the treatment of tumors and infectious diseases through modern methodologies and technologies will result in developing effective drugs to use for treatment of cancer and different infections, and lead to major positive changes in our society. The results of the study will be published in international scientific journals, patents would be issued, and drugs would be developed in conjunction with partners and pharmaceutical companies.

Both participating organizations have extensive experience using proven research methods in drug design and the study of natural compounds in biochemistry and pharmacology.

-Developing methodologies for standardizing extracts and compound extraction processes from different types of plants.
-Defining the basic structures of various compounds linked to anti-tumor activity.
-Identifying possible highly effective anti-tumor compounds.
-Conducting high-quality qualitative biomedical and pharmacological analysis of naturally occurring compounds.
-Developing procedures for preparation and extraction of preventative anti-tumor agents present in several plants.
-Publishing results in international scientific journals and licensing in local and global patent offices.
