Project summary

Goals of the project:

The main goal of the project is search and selection of weed pathogens for possible use in biological protection of crops from weeds in Kyrgyzstan and the USA.

Screening of weed pathogens is planned in the following three institutions: Laboratory of Mycology and Phytopathology of the Institute of Biology and Soil Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, Kyrgyz Scientific Research Institute of Livestock Breeding, and Pastures (Kyrgyzstan) and Biological Control of Weeds CRIS USDA, ARS, Foreign Disease -Weed Science Research Unit (USA).

Selection, screening and isolation of weed pathogens will be carried out in climatic conditions of Kyrgyzstan on the basis of the experimental farm of the Kyrgyz Scientific Research Institute of Livestock Breeding, and Pastures as well as through systematic expeditions to different regions of Kyrgyzstan. Assessment of biological activity and specialization of weed pathogens will be undertaken in three phases:

  • primary data collection, isolation, and screening of pathogenic forms in Kyrgyzstan;
  • laboratory and field evaluation of pathogens for biological activity in the conditions of Kyrgyzstan;
  • confirmation of biological activity specialization at FDWSRU (USA) followed by preparation of documents for commercialization of the final product.

Research tasks:
  1. Search and isolation of pathogens of harmful weed species in Kyrgyzstan for their possible use in biological protection of crops and against invasive weeds in USA;
  2. Laboratory tests of the effectiveness of promising pathogens for inhibition of target weeds in Kyrgyzstan;
  3. Field tests of the effectiveness of promising biological pathogens to inhibit target weeds in Kyrgyzstan;
  4. Testing of pathogens on particular specialization for classical biological control of weeds in quarantine at FDWSRU in USA;
  5. Drawing up documents for receiving permission to use promising effective and safe pathogens for classical biological inhibition of weeds in Kyrgyzstan and the United States.

Expected results
  1. Pathogens of harmful weed species in Kyrgyzstan will be isolated in pure culture for possible use in biological crop protection and against invasive weeds in USA;
  2. Promising pathogens for inhibition of target weeds will be tested and selected in laboratory conditions;
  3. Effectiveness of promising biological pathogens for inhibition of target weeds will be tested in field conditions of Kyrgyzstan;
  4. Promising pathogens will be tested on particular specialization for classical biological control of weeds in quarantine at FDWSRU in USA;
  5. Documents will be drawn up for receiving permission to use promising effective and safe pathogens for classical biological inhibition of weeds in Kyrgyzstan and USA.
