Project summary

The main task of the Project:

Сonceptual design and the choice of technical solution for realization of a large optical astronomical adaptive telescope of a new generation with segmented primary mirror 10 meters and more in diameter.

The technical approach:

An original concept is proposed, comprising:

1. System approach to the telescope error budget validation;

2. The most modern and advanced solutions in scheme, design and technology of a large telescope (rigid truss structures, multimotor drive without reductors etc.);

3. The original technical solution of the telescope mounting, one spherical assembly integrating a dome and a telescope functions;

4. The original optical scheme with a segmented spherical primary mirror (SPM) especially meant for the frequency instrumental errors compensationExpected results: The conceptual design of an adaptive segmented telescope 10 meters in diameter (AST-10) with the following main performances;

The telescope is intended to solve those actual problems of the observational cosmology, of the physics of galaxies and of the stellar astronomy which represents the really established research field for the large scale telescopes (with more than 4 meters in diameter), namely: multiobject spectroscopy and photometry of the wear objects, wear objects direct high resolution images etc.

At the same time the work on this Project will enable to use with maximal profit the scientific and technological potential of Russian scientists and technologists to the advantage of the international cooperation.

Interested scientific institutions and experts are invited to take part in this project on mutually advantageous conditions. Beside this the interested sides are suggested to discuss the problem of location of the telescope AST-10 in a region with the best astronomical climate (Chile, Canary Islands, Hawaii, etc.).
